Diesel engine oil is typically thicker than gasoline engine oil, which is why drivers should refrain from interchanging the two oil types. The thicker fluid profile of diesel engine oil allows it to absorb the larger amount of heat that is produced by diesel engines. Gasoline engines cannot burn diesel engine oil as efficiently as diesel engines can due to its physical makeup and various additives. Drivers who choose to place diesel engine oil into their gasoline engines may have issues with excess oil buildup and improper fuel emissions.
You should change your diesel oil routinely to ensure the best operation of your engine. Manufacturers recommend that drivers change their diesel engine oil at least every 10,000 miles, which is different from the 3,000 and 5,000-mile range that is recommended for gasoline engines. However, while the 10,000-mile schedule is a great benchmark, we recommend that you follow the guidelines that your vehicle’s manufacturer included in the owner’s manual for your model.
